Uhtceare will be published by the University of York Music Press and recorded by Dark Inventions as part of an Arts Council funded project for emerging composers. It will appear in a collection alongside works by Stef Conner, Benjamin Gait, Martin Scheuregger and Christopher Leedham. The recording will also feature Firewheel by Philip Cashian, which was commissioned by the ensemble last year.

The following piece was the new commission from Patrick John Jones. In such lofty company it would have been easy for the work of a young composer to be overshadowed, but Jones is clearly far too able and imaginative a composer to allow that to happen. Described as a descent in to and out of a bizarre musical ‘landscape’, the piece suggested certain affinities with the music of Harrison Birtwistle in its juxtaposition of musical blocks. However the comparison was not unflattering, as both the materials and the form were assured and compelling. As was to be expected the players once again delivered the music with both gusto and refinement.

My next major project is going to involve writing a piece for The University of York Symphony Orchestra, conducted by John Stringer. It will be performed at the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall, York, in November 2015
This is the result of receiving the University of York Music Department’s Lyons Celebration Award. As part of the commission, I will also be a musician in residence at The Banff Centre in Canada next year.
For the first post on my newly updated website, I’m delighted to announce three upcoming concerts at which my new wind quintet – called Uncanny Vale – will be performed by the Haffner Wind Ensemble.
This group is comprised of members from the Britten Sinfonia, those being the wonderful: Emer McDonough (flute), Nicholas Daniel (oboe), Joy Farrall (clarinet), Sarah Burnett (bassoon) and Stephen Bell (horn).

Friday 28 November 1.00pm – Norwich, St Andrew’s Hall
Tuesday 02 December 1.00pm – Cambridge, West Road Concert Hall (to be recorded and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 at a later date)

My piece will be performed alongside Michael Berkeley’s Re-Inventions, Crawford Seeger’s Suite for wind quintet and Nielsen’s Quintet for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, French Horn & Bassoon, Op.43.
About the commission
This work is the result of the ensemble’s OPUS2014 commission, which I was awarded earlier this year. The scheme for unpublished composers is now in its third year, and involves workshopping scores by a shortlist of composers and the selection of one piece for the commission. I also had a dedicated OPUS2014 rehearsal last week with the group, and they sounded tremendous.
The deadline for OPUS2015 has now passed, but unpublished composers should keep their eyes peeled next year for its return.
